World Music
|
World music includes both contemporary and traditional music (sometimes called folk music or roots music) from around the world. Traditional music is that music from any culture that is created and played by indigenous musicians or that are closely informed or guided by indigenous music of the regions of their origin. This includes generally all non-Western music, as well as some music from Western societies, but which has folk roots (e. g. Celtic music).
World music includes a very broad range of recordings of traditional indigenous music and song from around the world, and for the purposes of this site also includes contemporary World music. It is differentiated from the popular Western genres of music such as Classical, Rock, Jazz, Hip Hop, and so on.
